Cake-Sicle Pan

Something a little lighter, since my last couple of blog posts have been about politics.  Summer is in full swing and with the 4th of July this week, I found this “Cake-Sicle” pan.  I think it is a fun alternative to the old pop-sicles.  The best aspect about these sicles are that they don’t melt!

Give me a Shot of Spice!

Most of my friends know that I love to cook and that I do most of the cooking in our household. Jennifer likes to bake and she is a great baker… I can bake, but it is not my favorite form of cooking.

I recently saw this item on one of the websites I waste too much of my time on and thought it was pretty cleaver and that I should share it with your.

It is a one handed spice dispenser called SpiceShot by Chef’n. It dispenses a ¼ of a teaspoon with each click. Amazon sells it for about $8.00 which isn’t bad, although I would only buy a few of them for my most used spices, instead of one for each of my spices.

Donuts Anyone?

Almost every one loves donuts, but we all know those fried sinful creations are not very healthy for us.  With this pan, however, they can be a little better for us, by baking instead of frying.  The bottom allows the donuts to be popped out, so they still look “pretty.”

“Don’t play with your food!” — Yea right!

I’m sure we all remember our parents or teachers telling us, “Don’t play with your food.”  Now that I have a child,  I can’t say I’ve said that phrase… at least not yet.  I wonder if I will… our house hold is pretty comical most of the time, so probably not? Time will tell, I guess

Here is a product that encourages you to play with your food, so of course you know that I like it!

I remember seeing this product on TV a while back. I think it is a pretty goofy but fun way to make ice cream. Especially if you are wanting to work off those calories you are about to eat in 30-40 minutes, then I guess it is a good idea? huh?

How it Works:

  1. Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add rock salt.
  2. Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder.
  3. Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients.
  4. After about 10 minutes to 15 minutes, open the ice cream end, scrape down the sides, then check the ice end , pouring out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 15 more minutes.
  5. Eat up!

Herb Savor

There is nothing like cooking with fresh herbs, but they are expensive. I’m all for growing them, but that can be time consuming and frustrating if you, um, uh, forget to water them.

One exception, in our yard, is our rosemary TREE, ok, really it is a bush, but it could pass for a small tree. You can’t kill that stuff which is great!

For other herbs, I’m wondering how well this little item would work?

The description claims it will extend the life for up to 3 weeks, while “looking good” in the frig. (do I really care about how good it looks if it works?)

One other cool product, very similar to the Herb Savor, that I found locally and use all the time is “Gourmet Garden Herb Blend.” (http://gourmetgarden.com) We buy it locally at Super 1 Foods. It lasts up to 3 months and tastes pretty darn good.

Basil and Parsley are the two we use on a regular basis. I use basil in just about everything and it is expensive to buy the fresh stuff and the dried just doesn’t taste the same.  This alternative is the best I have found.

Look for it at your local market, I bet you’ll like it as much as I do.
